Dirk Strangely

DIRK STRANGELY

Dirk was born in Las Vegas, NV to hippy parents that followed rock bands and stayed in various communes, living in tents in the middle of nowhere. One commune was even affiliated with the Manson family. Eating various mushrooms Dirk and his family enjoyed the occassional battle of mythical creatures before bedding down in sleeping bags for the night.

By the time Dirk was 5yrs old his parents had settled down to live in an apartment. Dirk claims that the inspiration for his art began at the age of 6 when he saw an old guitar, and bow and arrow in an abandoned apartment lying amongst a variety of rubble and filth. Dirk wanted the guitar and bow very badly, but the room had a painting of a cat with bleeding eyes hanging crooked and sinisterly against blood splattered walls.

Eventually Dirk did muster the courage to retrieve the items, but Dirk attributes the fearful feeling that filled the room to the dark outlook on his art. Later Dirk’s grandfather told him the family who vacated the apartment had been murdered. Dirk reminisces of the frightening cat painting displayed on the wall and his inner battle between fear of entering the room and desire for the guitar and bow.

Today, Dirk lives in Texas with his wife and 2 children… but, at night when the lights go out and everyone is asleep, he brings out his Super 8mm cameras, brushes, pens, and brings to life the twisted reality and haunted images that live in his imagination.

Dirk is dedicated to a world of disturbing yet beautiful mysticism. He projects a creative take on his way of seeing things through a series of various media such as writing, comic books, sculpting, painting, digital art, films, puppetry, to name a few. His goal is to show the world we are all creatures of dark and light and to deny oneself of either is a lesson in self destruction.

Artist & Writer of horror, fantasy, and mysticism, Dirk Strangely is the creator of “Darkened Bedtime Stories for Children,” creator and writer of “Enchanted by darkness,” and illustrator of “Calloused: The Tombstone Tales.”
