The History Of HAuNTcon

Owning a haunted attraction is not an easy way to make a living. A haunted attraction is a business, like any other, and 60% of all business fail in the first three years,” states Leonard Pickel creator of  the Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Conference, HAuNTcon(R). People in the haunted attraction industry are highly creative and inventive, and some of the best people you will ever meet, but like many artistic types they were having trouble when it comes to the business side of haunting.

“I had too many friends lose their life savings, their homes and their spouses opening haunted houses and I knew I had to do something about it,” remembers Pickel who in 2004 created HAuNTcon(R), an annual professional conference designed by haunters for haunters, to share information, tips and tricks on how to make a living “scaring people!”

HAuNTcon ® now draws people from the across the United States and as far away as Hong Kong each year. Attendees include professionals and amateurs of every age and skill level, including Haunted Attraction Owners and Managers, aspiring Horror Fans interested in starting a Haunt business, Haunt Actors, Home Haunters (who decorate their house/syards in October) and others who just love the Halloween Season.

“From the very beginning we had a great model for what a true Haunted Attraction convention needed to look like,” explains Pickel, a haunted house designer and consultant with over 30 years experience in the field. Three days of in-depth Education, Tours of area Haunted Attractions, a Tradeshow featuring the latest products and service companies, Social Networking, and, just for fun, a Hearse Show and spectacular Costume Ball!

“People in the Halloween Industry are too busy in October to see other Haunted Attractions across the country,” explains Pickel. “And one of the key components of our convention is the off-season tours of local Haunted Attractions.” To facilitate these tours, HAuNTcon moves to a new host city every year so attendees can experience the country’s best Haunted Attractions.

If you are looking for the newest and freshest ideas in the haunt industry, if you are looking to spend quality time with like minded people who live Halloween and haunted attractions, if you are a seasoned haunt owner, just thinking about opening your own haunted attraction, or if you just like to have a really great time with really great people, then HAuNTcon is a must attend event.
